Answer: The Internet of Things (IoT)
What is IoT? It’s the term used to describe the interconnectivity between smart technology and the internet. IoT is changing our lives, how we go about our day, how we make purchases and how we work smarter.
Amazon – Making lives easier through the IoT
Amazon’s mission is to improve the lives of consumers by providing superior customer experiences through innovate solutions using the internet and technology, two such innovations are the Amazon Echo and Alexa. The Echo is an always on, home smart speaker which connects to Amazon’s cloud-based voice service Alexa (the brain of the Echo).
Have a question? Ask Alexa. Want to make a purchase? Ask Alexa. Want to make a call? Ask Alexa.
You get the idea; the Echo is a smart device designed to make our lives easier. You can even take control of your home by asking Alexa to control other smart technology within your home like smart lights, switches, TVs and thermostats.
Alexa, switch off the lights.
Fitbit – Empowering healthy living through the IoT
In 2007 the founders of Fitbit realised sensor and wireless technology had advanced to the point where they could create amazing experiences in fitness and health. So, they embarked on a journey to create a wearable product which would change the way people moved.
Fitbit has grown into a complete fitness tool, tracking every part of your day including activity, exercise, food, weight and sleep by combining wearable technology and an intuitive dashboard. It provides total visibility on your progress towards your fitness goals, helping you make the small changes needed to improve your overall health.
Both Amazon and Fitbit are great business-to-consumer examples of how IoT technology is changing the world we live in but the IoT also applies to the business-to-business landscape.
Businesswise Solutions – Eliminating energy waste through the IoT
We share a similar mission with both Amazon and Fitbit to improve the lives of our clients and we do this through the innovative use of data and technology to visualise and eliminate energy waste.
With energy costs continually rising, pressure from the climate change movement and government carbon targets we saw the need to create a solution which would help businesses drive positive change, eliminating energy waste and in doing so reducing carbon and cost. And so, Energy-Management-as-a-Service (EMaaS) was born, which harnesses the power of the IoT.
EMaaS gives businesses complete visibility and control of their energy consumption and like Fitbit, it uses non-invasive, wireless sensors which transmit in real-time back to our intuitive Energy Information Technology (EIT) platform.
The EIT platform collects the data and visualises it allowing you to keep track of your business energy consumption, by site, zone, type, even to machine level. Our expert people are also there every step of the way, identifying opportunities and motivating your internal teams.
